This session is intended for flight instructors to highlight weather knowledge areas that have been identified as lacking by pilots, to enhance instructor ability to teach aviation weather, and to provide information on new weather products including their limitations and enhanced benefits.

About Our Presenters & Host

Gary Pokodner - Presenter

Gary Pokodner is the Program Manager for the FAA's NextGen Weather Technology in the Cockpit (WTIC) Program. In this role, Gary has been working to identify new research efforts related to bringing weather information into the cockpit.

Danny Sims - Presenter

Mr. Danny Sims is an Atmospheric Scientist with the FAA Aviation Weather Division. He currently leads the Inflight Icing and Model Development and Enhancement weather research projects. He has over 30 years' experience in aviation weather including project management, weather product integration into the Traffic Flow Management System, and test and evaluation of aviation weather products. He has worked with a wide variety of aviation stakeholders. He was also responsible for sustainment of the Traffic Flow Management System at the Air Traffic Control System Command Center gaining a unique perspective into the daily balancing of air traffic demand and capacity across the NAS.

Mr. Sims previously served as a weather officer in the US Air Force providing operational weather forecasting services and leading research and development efforts. He holds a BA in Environmental Science from the University of Virginia and a BS and MS in Meteorology from the Pennsylvania State University.

Karen Kalishek - Host

Karen is the NAFI Board Chair, a Designated Pilot Examiner, three-time NAFI Master Instructor, CFI, CFII, MEI, CFI-G, AGI, IGI, FAA Gold Seal Instructor and FAASTeam Lead Representative. She teaches in a range of aircraft and enjoys flying her own RV6.

Karen is a Major in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), serves as a member of the WINGS Industry Network, contributes to the FAA Surface Safety Group, is an FAA Safety Team Lead Representative, and is active in several other aviation organizations. Karen is the 2019 National FAASTeam Representative of the year.

She became active in aviation after success as a senior VP in the banking sector, as a graduate school professor, and as President of her own international consulting business.
