How Type Clubs Benefit CFIs

Instructors become good at teaching the skills for FAA Practical Tests in their training fleet aircraft. When providing Flight Reviews, IPC and transition training in other aircraft types there are often changes in technique required to accomplish tasks and maneuvers driven by the specific characteristics of those aircraft.

How do you get the type-specific knowledge you need to provide this critical training? Aircraft Type Clubs have resources for flight instructors - often for free.

This program will explore the resources available to you through Type Clubs

Topics we'll cover include:

  • The case for type-specific training
  • What is a Type Club, and why are they so important to airplane owners and pilots?
  • How to find instructional resources applicable to the airplane in which you'll instruct
  • What resources are available through Type Clubs that, although not specific to the airplane you are flying, provide additional information to apply to instructing in any aircraft.
About Our Presenter & Host

Thomas P. Turner - Presenter

Thomas P. Turner is Executive Director of the American Bonanza Society Air Safety Foundation. He was a founding member of EAA's Type Club Coalition, serving as its chairman for two years, is a Life Member of NAFI and is a past NAFI Board of Directors member.

Specializing in Beech instruction for over 30 years, Tom has been inducted into the Flight Instructor Hall of Fame.

Bob Meder - Host

Robert "Bob" Meder completed his initial flight training in 1995 and earned his CFI in 2006. He went on to add single-engine and multi-engine instrument certificates. Recently he retired from a 40+ year career at a major railroad as the Director of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). While in this position, he worked directly with the FAA on regulatory issues for Drones and critical infrastructure companies. During this time, he continued to instruct.

Bob has over 6,000 hours of dual instruction and enjoys training new flight instructors, challenging them to recognize the distinction between skill and critical thinking. He emphasizes that superior risk management, not just skill, is the key to safe flight training. He is a FAASTeam Lead Rep at the St Louis FSDO and was honored as the district and regional flight instructor of the year in 2009 and 2010. After nearly ten years as chair, Bob currently serves as Chair Emeritus on the NAFI board of directors.
