As flight instructors we are taught many platitudes in the Instructor Handbook that we often neglect to apply to the teaching environment. Emotional Safety in the Flight School is one of those. Join Peg Ballou as she "slips on her hip boots and wades" into a timely topic that may seem harmless, but is sensitive and applicable to our flight schools and personal careers.
Peg will propose some actions the flight instructor as well as the flight school can enact to Protect Yourself. The presentation will include challenging discussion on this sometimes controversial subject matter.
Peg Ballou is a CFII and Distinguished Flight Instructor with 2,400 hours total time. While in high school, Peg's mom gave her the choice of lessons – flying or piano - an easy decision. She achieved her private pilot certificate before turning 18, and then "marriage, poverty and babies" took her out of the cockpit for 30 years. She returned to aviation after a missions trip prompted her daughter to get into flight training, bringing the aviation addiction full circle.
Then, after home educating her children, Peg segued into flight education, making learning visible and hands-on. She brings this background to the aviation realm, making the abstract concrete. She has recorded several NAFI Professional Development Program courses, is a FAASTeam representative and continues actively instructs at Ballou Skies Aviation flight school in Bucyrus, Ohio.
Mike Thompson has been a CFII since 1979. During eight years with the US Coast Guard, he crewed fixed-wing planes and helicopters conducting flight instruction part-time.
After active duty, Thompson completed his master's degree in education while teaching airframe and power-plant mechanics for the Wisconsin Technical College System. Thompson went on to spend eight years as an instructional-design consultant and worked on projects in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Kuwait.
He then moved into college administration holding director, assistant dean, and dean positions. He retired in 2013 and continues to teach and fly as a flight instructor out of New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
